Labourer held in June 4 kidnapping of 2 cousins
A 26-year-old labourer of Freeport has been arrested and charged with a series of offences arising out of the June 4 kidnapping of cousins Amit Mohan and Vedeesh Mohan. The suspect is expected to appear in the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court today charged with two counts of kidnapping, two counts of false imprisonment, robbery with violence, possession of a firearm to endanger life, possession of ammunition to endanger life and possession of arms and ammunition. He was arrested by Southern Division detectives at his Bucarro Road home on Thursday night. However, police sources said they did not recover any of the $54,000 ransom and the $38,000 worth of jewelry which relatives reportedly paid to the kidnappers. Police are searching for two suspects of South Trinidad whom they believe are also linked to the kidnapping. Amit, 24, the son of businessman Inchan Mohan, proprietor of Priya’s Creation, and Mohan’s nephew Vedeesh, 20, were kidnapped on Saturday June 4 from Amit’s home at West Coast Drive, Gulf View. The kidnappers had demanded a $5 million ransom. Three days later, Vedeesh, a US citizen, was shot and released at Mosquito Creek, South Oropouche. Afraid for Amit’s safety, Inchan, eventually paid $54,000 and $38,000 worth of jewelry to the kidnappers. Amit was released unharmed on Monday June 13 at Old Sugar Factory Road, Reform Village, Gasparillo. Because of Vedeesh’s US citizenship officers of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), were in the country assisting the Anti-Kidnapping Squad and San Fernando CID in their investigations.
