Seat belts save lives

THE EDITOR: More than 500 drivers, front and rear seat passengers are killed or seriously injured on our roads each year. The impact of an accident can be very serious. A speed of only 50 kilometres an hour, is the same as falling from a third-floor window. Wearing a seat belt saves lives, it dramatically reduces the risk of death or serious injury by more than half.

All cars manufactured after September 1, 1989 should have rear seat belts fitted. If your car is not fitted with rear seat belts you are advised to have them fitted.

The responsibility for the wearing of seat belts in a vehicle is with the driver.

For a child under three years of age appropriate child restraint must be worn. For a child aged three to 11 years, appropriate child restraint must be worn if available if not, an adult seat belt must be worn, in the front or rear seat of the vehicle.

The responsibility for the wearing of seat belts for adult passengers in the front or rear of the vehicle is with the passengers. Do not allow children to stand on or between front and rear seats of the vehicle.

Make sure that child safety door locks, where fitted, are used when children are in the vehicle. Keep children under control in the vehicle.

Remember: Belt up and play it safe.
