Gandhi Memorial school wins health quiz
GANDHI Memorial Vedic Primary School of Aranjuez has won the first national primary schools health quiz. Thirty-seven schools participated in the finals held yesterday at Cascadia Hotel, St Ann’s. Placing second was the San Fer-nando TML followed by Hope Anglican of Tobago and the Trincity/Dinsley Government School. The girls team from Gandhi Memorial beat San Fernando TML by 60 points to claim the trophy and book vouchers totalling $2,000. In his address to the students, Health Minister John Rahael reminded them that their health was their most important asset, which if taken care of will be the foundation for a very successful life for the future. He noted that they would have learnt how to look after their health, and about diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes in preparation for the quiz. He advised the students of the dangers of the diseases, and urged them "never to smoke." "Smoking is for chimneys and mufflers, and cigarettes have poison and tar." However in the same breath while pointing out to the Standard Three and Four students that alcohol was also bad, the minister said it was okay to have an occasional glass of wine or a beer. Rahael also implored the students to pass on the knowledge gained from the quiz to other students and relatives. The quiz was a collaborative effort between the Ministries of Health and Education and formed part of observances as health promotion month. The objective of the quiz was to ensure that children are informed about healthy lifestyles through research and studies.
