Mother and daughter hurt in crash

A MOTHER and her five-year-old daughter were yesterday warded at the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH) following a vehicular accident on the Solomon Hochoy Highway.

According to a police report, at around 1.15 pm, Deomatee Sammy, 44, of Sieunarine Trace, Chase Village, Chaguanas, was driving her blue Laurel along the south bound lane of the highway in the vicinity of the Couva Flyover, when apparently she suffered a blackout and lost control of the vehicle, which began to swerve and eventually slammed into a metal electricity pole.

Sammy’s daughter, Diksha, who was seated in the front passenger seat, was thrown out of the vehicle onto the median. The car landed on top of the girl’s left leg. Onlookers reportedly had to raise and shift the mangled wreck off the girl.

Police officers and army personnel attached to the Joint Army/Police Patrol Unit Central were quickly on the scene. They were supported by officers of the E999, Freeport Police Station and fire officials from the Chaguanas and Couva Fire Stations.

Mother and daughter were rushed to the Couva District Hospital where they were both treated and then transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital.

Sammy was warded in a critical condition while her daughter was said to be in a stable condition.

WPC Soodeen of the Freeport Police Station is investigating.
