A new trend in driving

THE EDITOR: There is a new trend in driving these days, especially with the young drivers. The new style is to use the reclining seat on which they sit to drive as a rocking chair. The seat is sent back almost touching the back seat as if it is not needed as a back rest. I believe this could be the result of many accidents.

When a driver is not in full control of a vehicle then an accident could happen. To be in full control of a vehicle a person must sit properly behind the wheel so there is enough time to be in control if there is danger ahead. We read of many accidents where the driver looses control of the automobile, and I believe it is because of their approach to driving. The lack of seriousness while driving, and not paying enough attention to the road. Now there are the cell phone drivers that are so fascinated by the conversation forget they are on the road, while not paying enough attention to the other traffic on all sides of the road.

A few years ago it was a different style; the young drivers were changing the original steering wheel for a smaller one, now they have changed that for a bigger exhaust pipe creating a lot of unnecessary noise like a racing car. I believe that the authorities at the traffic branch should look into this malpractice on our roads, and also check on the disturbing loud music.

Too many accidents are occurring on our roads these days, and I believe it is because of carelessness, and many mishaps could be avoided if people behave in a humane manner. Something must be done to stop the carnage on our roads especially by the younger drivers with the loud music and also loud exhaust and driving as though they are going to stop a fire.

It is time that chauffeurs take a more serious stance on the streets while realising that their responsibility is great in maintaining their role as a driver to the safety to their passengers, and also other road users let us hope that the younger drivers would use the back rest for better control so they would have a greater control of the vehicle, and would feel more comfortable behind the steering wheel rather than taking the seat for a see-saw or a rocking chair.

As I wrote before, since the advent of motor vehicles, man has found a new way to die, but in many instances it is the carelessness that causes many drivers to experience untimely deaths. It is time that drivers realise that a motor vehicle is not a toy, and could be a serious weapon of destruction.
