KC looking to get back on its feet

KC CONFECTIONERY, the candy manufacturing company, whose warehouse was completely destroyed by fire last Friday, with losses close to $20M, is expected to begin operations within two weeks.

Company CEO Imran Khan said the board met yesterday and decided that production would resume as early as possible.

"We have to pursue a line of strategy that will not affect the livelihood of our 275 employees for any length of time," he said.

Investigations are still continuing to determine the cause of the fire that ripped through the KC warehouse in Couva.

Khan said the company would pull through. "Although a major disaster has confronted us as a company and also the employees and we have to face the reality of the situation with good planning and a sound strategy that will keep us afloat on the local and international market," he said in an interview yesterday.

The CEO said he would be addressing the employees today to review "our position and to come up with proposals to resume work." He predicted that within two weeks the company "should be back in full swing."

Khan said the calls to the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers Association (TTMA) to assist KC Confectionery with wrapping and packaging arrangements have been positive. "We have received positive responses from a number of firms," he said.

Khan said it was the first time in the company’s 85-year history that they faced such a disaster.

He said that the sales department would open up first on Wednesday morning, after which engineers and technicians would carry out plans for the production plant.

He said that certain areas in the main plant would be used for storage until production got into full swing.

He thanked the firefighters and the police for their assistance in ensuring that nearby houses were not destroyed by the fire.
