Prayers concerning proposed Smelter Plant

THE EDITOR: An open letter to the Honourable Patrick Manning, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Office of the Prime Minister, Whitehall, Queens Park West, Port-of-Spain.

Dear Sir

Re: The Aluminum Smelter Plant at Cap-de-Ville, Chatham.

As a group of concerned Pastors in Trinidad and Tobago after long sleepless nights of prayer and supplication concerning the proposed Aluminum Smelter plant to be constructed at Chatham, Point Fortin and after a careful study of relevant information regarding the same, obtained from a host of sources including the internet and media, I implore you in the context of good governance to desist from executing such a project.

The search that we have done on aluminum plants provided a battery of alarming discoveries that are a great cause for concern. The dangers that the smelter plant poses to the environment, the flora and fauna, the environment and to the citizens of our country, particularly those living in close proximity to the proposed site are catastrophic in both the short term and long term. The Aluminum smelter plant may create revenue in the short term but it will undoubtedly create a nation of sick individuals for which future leaders will have to use that same revenue to provide health care. The benefits simply do not outweigh or even balance with disadvantages.

Prime Minister, please consider that in Point Lisas alone there are over twenty-nine (29) poisonous gases. The people are more aware than you think about the dangers involved with this plant. They do not wish to see their nation destroyed for short term gain. This is why we, concerned Pastors, are taking it upon ourselves as representatives of God to inform you of the facts because we recognise that it is not only about creating jobs; the future is of ultimate importance. There are enough sectors in our country to develop without devastating our nation.

The concerned Pastors beseech you Prime Minister, to use that authority you have on behalf of the people and not against the people. We are not looking at this from a political viewpoint but from a spiritual viewpoint. We are praying that God disappoints you in this venture.

As always, we continue to pray for the government and all appointed leaders of our nation.

JOHN BROWN
For and on behalf of The Concerned Pastors
