Nomination papers filed for vacant Siparia seat
NOMINATIONS for the July 18 Siparia East/San Francique South by-election, proceeded smoothly as candidates of the PNM, UNC and NAR filed their nomination papers at the Siparia Regional Corporation headquarters. UNC candidate Christine Rogers was the first to file nomination papers, just after 9 am. She was accompanied by a large band of supporters including Fyzabad MP Chandresh Sharma and her campaign manager, Dr Allen Sammy. Rogers expressed confidence that she would wrest control of the electoral district from the PNM which won the marginal seat by 600 votes in the 2003 Local Government elections. The seat was declared vacant with the death of PNM councillor Harripersad Ramkissoon on December 12. PNM candidate Ivan Sinclair, accompanied by campaign manager Gene Porter, was second to file papers and did so around mid-morning. Sinclair declared his party’s confidence at retaking the seat. The former businessman added he was committed to the future development of Siparia. Also filing nomination papers was the NAR candidate Lee Aberdeen, a businessman of Siparia. NAR political leader Lennox Sankersingh, described the party’s chances of securing a victory at the poll as "extremely encouraging." Returning Officer was Siparia Regional Corporation CEO, Stephen Creese. The corporation was controlled by the PNM by a five-three margin, but Ramkissoon’s death has reduced the majority to four.
