Zimmerman holds on to slim lead

ALEXANDER ZIMMERMAN of Peru held a slim one-point advantage after yesterday’s second day of the 2005 Optimist North American Championships, currently taking place in Store Bay.

Zimmerman leads the field of 183 participants with 17 points, while Brazilian Alexandre Alencastro on 18 points, Peru’s Guillermo Arce on 26 points and the Trinidad and Tobago pair of Anthony Alkins (27.5) and Matthew Scott (30).

But Scott was TT’s star on the day, as he trounced his rivals to win Race 5A. In all, three races were contested on the day — 4A & B, 5A & B as well as 6A & B.

Under overcast morning conditions, which slowly improved as the day went on, Scott whipped his field in Race 5A, with Argentina’s Francisco Sucari second, TT’s Callum Ellis third, Peru’s Stefano Peschiera fourth and Brazil’s Cassio do Canto fifth.

Brazilian Alexandre Alencastro claimed Race 4A, ahead of countryman Conrado Reyna Kurtz, Venezuelan Victor De Leon, Bermudan James Anfossi and Argentinian Gaston Bisio, while Scott was 13th, fellow TT Annick Lewis 17th and Stuart Leighton 23rd.

In Race 4B, American James Pottharst prevailed, with Argentinian Patrick Bell, Zimmerman and the American pair of Ian Liberty and Colin Smith trailing. Local boy Ellis was 17th, Alkins 20th and Nicholas Knox 31st.

Brazil’s Felipe Haddad topped the field in Race 5B, followed by France’s Mattis Naud, Venezuela’s Alberto Rengifo, Bermuda’s Elijah Simmons and Alencastro, while, among the TT rivals, Andrew Merry was 13th, James Leighton 17th and Wesley Scott 19th.
