Student with ‘mystery’ illness dies
THE battle of Grant Memorial Presbyterian schoolgirl Saadiq Grant to overcome a "mystery" illness ended on Wednesday with the child’s death. Grant died around 11.25 pm at the Intensive Care Unit of the San Fernando General Hospital where she had been warded for the past 20 days. Her mother, Joanne Joseph, a nursing assistant of Duncan Village, San Fernando, told Newsday yesterday, "She fought to the last. She did good. I am proud of her." On Wednesday, doctors on two occasions hadattempted to resuscitate Grant. Joseph said yesterday that she is hopeful that the autopsy carded for today would ascertain the cause of her daughter’s death. Grant, a Standard Three pupil, was rushed to hospital on June 10 for high fever and vomitting. The child’s condition worsened when both her kidneys failed. Her liver functions gave way and on Wednesday her heart stopped. Medical tests ruled Meningococcal Meningitis illness, Hepatitis C, and Leptospirosis. Funeral arrangements have been tentatively carded for Monday.
