‘Super Granny’ gets to court too late

ELISE JOSEPH, the 73-year-old woman who earned the nickname "Super Granny" after she subdued an armed bandit by sitting on him, went to the Point Fortin Magistrates’ Court yesterday to witness his appearance on several charges but Joseph, of Vessigny Village near La Brea, did not get even a glimpse of Devin Surrillo, 25.

Due to the absence of a senior magistrate, Surrillo appeared before an acting Justice of the Peace on five charges. Surillo, of Celestial Park, La Brea, was not called upon to plead on the charge of shooting Joseph’s grandson, Anthony, at around 12:25 am on Monday.

The charge arose from an incident at Joseph’s home in which Anthony was shot. The agile grandmother rushed to the defence of her wounded grandson. She subdued Surrillo and restrained him by sitting on him until the police arrived on the scene. Yesterday, Surillo appeared before Ag JP Bernadette Wilson for possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, wounding with intent, possession of a firearm to endanger life and possession of ammunition to endanger life. The charges were laid by PC Jack of the La Brea Police Station. Surrillo’s matter was adjourned to today when he is expected to appear before a senior magistrate.

‘Super Granny" Joseph arrived in the courthouse just minutes after Surrillo appeared.
