Rangers stay atop Super League
SUPERSTAR RANGERS continued to hold on to their slim lead over Police in the 2005 Sportworld Super League competition. Yesterday, Rangers took care of M&M Harvard 2-1 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, while the lawmen earned a similar result over Angostura 1976 FC Phoenix at Canaan, Bon Accord, Tobago. But the biggest winners on the day were defending champs Joe Public, who registered their third successive victory by virtue of a 6-1 demolition of Stokelyvale at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Dr Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence, Macoya, Tunapuna. PLIPDECO Caroni, who were unbeaten after four rounds of games, lost their second in a row, by a 2-0 margin to WASA Clean & White at WASA ground, St Joseph, while cellar-placed Media 21 FC collected their first point of the season, with a 1-1 draw with Maraval Youth Academy at the Mt Hope Junior Secondary School Ground. At the Hasely Crawford Stadium, powerfully-built forward Akudu Goodridge gave Rangers a 4th minute lead, with ex-national under-17 captain Josimar Belgrave widening the gap with a 27th minute effort, tapping home a Colin Roberts free-kick. The game watched by a sprinkling of supporters was a scrappy affair, with another former national youth player Dean Pacheco pulling one back for M&M Harvard in the 80th. An own-goal by Sherlon Carrington put Police ahead before Kelvin Keith equalised on the stroke of half-time, but Neri Joseph’s 84th minute strike gave the lawmen full points. At the Marvin Lee Stadium, Jason Springer netted a double for the "Eastern Lions", in the 35th and 45th minutes, while Hollis Brown 11th, Fabiano Agripino 49th, Lyndon "Chubby" Andrews 61st and Sean Cooper 69th were the other goal-getters for the hosts, with Curtis Job netting for the Tobagonians in the 39th. Goals by Alvin Beharry in the 55th and Brian Bain, near the end of regulation time, secured the win for WASA over the sliding Caroni while, at Mt Hope, Shaton Ollivierre’s 49th minute strike for Maraval was cancelled out by Anthony Straker’s 75th minute leveller. One game was carded for last night at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, with Couva Players United hosting Crab Connection.
