More than 10,000 at 103 FM concert
More than 10,000 fans of 103 FM braved the inclement weather to attend the 12th anniversary concert at Skinner Park San Fernando on Sunday last. The view from the stage reflected a sea of umbrellas as the audience danced away to the music of the band SSL Melobugz led by dynamic musician, Rishi Mahatoo. The lead singer Andy Singh joined in with his father Ras Nancoo Singh to deliver the hit remixed tunes of today. Andy stayed on stage for a full two hours doing the two remixed tunes "Koya Koya Chann" and "Jiska Mujhe." Backup singers Arti Butkoon, Devika Ram and Navita Mahatoo also had the crowd swaying with their rendition of chutney and film songs. Among the guest performers who had the crowd moving, were Heeralal Rampartap, Rasika Dindial, Rooplal Girdharie, Sam Boodram and Anil Bheem. Rampartap who is the reigning chutney soca monarch told the crowd that the Skinner Park stage remained a special venue for him as he won three chutney crowns there. He also said that he always saved the best performance for the San Fernando fans. He sang "Tap Tap Jhulana," "Leh we go Mayaro" and "Ah ha to run for meh life." The many patrons who waited into the night for the performance of the band Dil-E-Nadan were disappointed when it was announceed that the band would not be appearing due to technical difficulties. Executive director of the radio station, Yaseen Rahaman told Newsday that the problem with the sound system was a result of the heavy downpour that caused wires to malfunction. He noted that members of Dil-E-Nadan were at the venue but could not go on stage due to this problem. He apologised to all the fans of Dil-E-Nadan saying that there would be other public outreach programmes hosted by the radio station later this year. The show got started about 2.30 pm and went on for eight hours until 10 pm. The announcers of the radio station gave away prizes for the groups displaying the largest banner. The winner received a cooler plus a Black and Decker drill and a tool box. The biggest posse won a three gallon cooler, and a Bar-b- Que grill. Hampers were also given out from, National Flour Mills, Stag, Guinness, NP and Blue Mountain Waters.
