Teens assisting cops in latest murder probe
THE murder figure at press time stood at 181, one less than the number of days passed for the year to make it one killing a day. And should the number of suspicious killings that have now been given inquiry status be added to the list, Police said the figure would surpass the 182 days gone for 2005. The latest two murder victims are tradesmen Joel Medica, and Kerdell Rollock. According to reports around 11.15 am yesterday residents of First Hamlet Street, St Barbs Laventille heard several shots, when they investigated they found the body of Medica, 31, alias ‘Reddo’, lying in a pool of blood with several gunshot wounds to his body. He was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he died one hour later following an emergency operation. When Newsday visited his upper St Francois Valley Road, Belmont home relatives were too traumatised to speak. Police have no records and motive for the killing of the welder. Autopsy confirmed Medica was shot six times in his stomach, head, shoulder, leg and back. Visiting the scene were Cpl Samaroo and PC Hunte. Cpl Samaroo is continuing inquiries. On Monday in the East- West corridor Rollock, 20, met his death while standing up to two ‘bad boys’ for his friend. According to eyewitness reports around 6.30pm on Monday after playing football at Constantine Park, Tunapuna, the HYPE trained welder went to the Lackpat Street, Tunapuna home of his friend and team-mate, Keston, when two men called out to Keston. Both Keston and Rollock walked outside on to the road when they were confronted by one of the men with a gun. Keston ran to the back of the house, while Rollock stood up and said ‘all yuh only playing bad boys’ when a struggle ensued and the gun went off shooting him in the head. Rollock’s parents WPC Dawn Gordon and father NP Petroleum Security officer Anthony Rollock were contacted. They rushed to the scene and took their injured son to the Eric Williams Medical complex where he died at 2.50 am yesterday. An eyewitness to the shooting collapsed at the scene and had to be rushed together with Rollock to the EWMC where she was treated for the trauma, and discharged yesterday morning. When Newsday visited the home at Moosai Avenue, Tunapuna, the traumatised mother could not give much information except to say her son was a wonderful, loving, miserable child who did not deserve to die so. She also said that even if she got justice, it will not bring back her son. When Newsday visited the father at his home at 65 Back Street, Tunapuna he refused to talk. Residents at Rollock’s home where the shooting took place said they were not in a position to speak at the time. Two teens 16 and 18 later gave themselves up to the Tunapuna police, and are currently assisting them with their inquiries. Autopsy shows that Kerdell was shot once with a bullet that hit his finger and then penetrated his head. Cpl Riley of the Tunapuna police st ation is investigating.
