TSTT technician gunned down
A PASTOR appealed for a return to morality and spirituality after a member of his congregation was shot and killed yesterday. Pastor Oswald David, leader of Deliverance Ministries, made the call after TSTT technician Sirvon "Redman" Hughes was gunned down in Second Caledonia at about 11 am yesterday as he waited for a mechanic to attend to his car. Eyewitnesses said Hughes, 26, of Williams Avenue, Morvant, was sitting on a concrete culvert along Upper Caledonia Road when a gunman walked up to him and fired several shots, hitting him in the head. Hughes ran a short distance before he collapsed and died. Residents of the area described Hughes as a quiet man who did not "mess or meddle." "Neither he nor his family was known to be involved in anything, they spoke to no one and did not lime in the area. Why would someone want to kill him? We do not know." Hughes’ mother, Pamela, was too grief-stricken to speak to reporters yesterday. However, Pastor David described the deceased as a good man who had been involved in all levels of church work since 1983. He said Hughes had been an outstanding person. "This man was involved with nothing criminal. It was from work, to home, to church and vice versa. His killing is a shock because he was not into that life and troubled no one. "The person who killed Hughes certainly did not have a God-fearing base and unfortunately the dead man is a victim of that lack. What we need is a return to these values in the home, both morality and spiritual values, the reduction of shows on television which only promote violence," Pastor David said. Visiting the murder scene were Supt Trim, ASP Cummings, Insp Hilaire and Cpls Jacob and Vidalle.
