Glen’s sudden-death equaliser saves TT
TRINIDAD and Tobago coach Leo Beenhakker was very upbeat in his team’s dressing room following their 2-2 draw with Panama in their second CONCACAF 2005 Gold Cup match at the Orange Bowl Stadium, Miami. At the end of Sunday’s game, the Dutchman said: "That’s what I like guys. That’s what I like to see from my team." He was referring to Cornell Glen’s last-gasp time-added equaliser which earned the Warriors a point, after they fell behind to an 90th minute goal. But Beenhakker was of far from satisfied with his team’s overall performance, while applauding their show of grit and determination, when it appeared all was lost. Glasgow Rangers defender Marvin Andrews headed the Warriors into a 17th minute lead, but because of some lethargic defensive play they allowed Panama back into the game when Luis Tejada levelled the scores in the 24th, minute after Cyd Gray made a hash of a simple clearance. The Warriors’ defender elected to head away when it was easier to clear with his legs, the ball skidded through to Tejeda who gave a stranded goalkeeper Kelvin Jack no chance. Panama took what appeared to be a winning lead in the dying stages of regulation time when a long clearance beat Andrews and Tejeda ran on to the ball and fired past an advancing Jack off the inside a post. But Glen, a late substitute, rose high to meet a right side centre from another "sub" Angus Eve, and buried his header past the helpless Panamanian goalkeeper. As a result, Beenhakker put his full squad through a 45-minute training session yesterday morning at Barry University, with Sunday’s starting team working separately from other team members. But things ended on a sour note when Carlos Edwards, attempting to return after a thigh strain, again pulled up lame, and is certain to miss out on the crucial game against Colombia this afternoon which will kick off at 5 pm. And midfielder Aurtis Whitley missed training completely nursing an ankle injury. Defender Brent Sancho was however able to take part in the session. Honduras are atop of Group A with four points, joined by Panama with the Warriors third on two points. The Warriors need at least a draw against the Colombians this afternoon if they are to advance to the quarter-final stage, as one of the two best third placed finishers. But it all depends on if either Canada or Cuba do not win their game by a big margin.
