Psychiatric evaluation for teen who buried baby

THE TEENAGER accused of burying her newborn baby alive will undergo psychiatric evaluation at the San Fernando General Hospital. Police sources said doctors needed to assess the mental state of the 14-year-old girl before she could be interviewed.

Depending on the results of that evaluation, investigators will then take a statement from the girl. The police are expected to send a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions Geoffrey Henderson, who will determine whether charges will be laid against the teenager.

The girl, who hid her pregnancy from her mother, delivered her baby in an outside bathroom at a neighbour’s house at Monkey Town Branch Road, New Grant, Princes Town last Friday.

The girl, a former student of a junior secondary school, reportedly walked a mile into the forest and buried the baby in a hole two feet deep.

Villager Sheldon Monsegue rescued the baby more than 30 minutes later.

Hospital sources said the baby, who has been named Judah, is in satisfactory condition at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.

Sgt Renrick of the Princes Town CID is continuing investigations.
