Baugh, Tadpole ensure ‘A’ team tie
COLOMBO: Carlton Baugh and Dave Mohammed shared in a smashing unbeaten seventh-wicket century stand that lifted West Indies ‘A’ to a tie against Sri Lanka ‘A’ on the Duckworth/ Lewis run-rate method in the first match of their five-match One-Day series at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground yesterday. After a rain-break, West Indies ‘A’ were set a revised target of 201 from 41 overs, and clutched a share of the honours in spite of slipping to a very wobbly 99 for six in the 26th over. Baugh lashed 65 off 67 balls with two fours and three sixes, and Mohammed finished on 33, off 37 balls, to complete a fine all-round game. Left-arm spinner Mohammed was the chief wicket-taker for the West Indies when the home side batted and scored 253 for eight off 50 overs. In the Sri Lanka ‘A’ team’s innings, Saman Jayantha top-scored with 73, supported by Avishka Gunawardene (68). Bowling for the West Indies, Mohammed returned tidy figures of four for 44 off ten overs, while Samuels (1/8), Dwight Washing-ton (1/32) and Darren Sammy (1/56) shared three wickets. When the West Indies replied, they lost Lendl Simmons (six), Sewnarine Chattergoon (12) and captain Daren Ganga (two) cheaply and slipped to 21 for three. Marlon Samuels (34) and Dave Bernard (29) halted the slide and took the score to 84 when leg-spinner Kaushal Lokuarachchi dislodged Bernard, and 13 runs later, Darren Sammy was run-out for two. Baugh then delivered his aggressive half-century, and with Mohammed, revived West Indies ‘A’’s hopes of victory, before falling one run short. Pacer Loku Dilhara had done the early damage for Sri Lanka ‘A’, removing the top-order with figures of three for 21 from six overs. The second game will be played today, with the remaining games in the series set for Saturday, Monday and Tuesday.
