Metivier wins South ride
ENERGETIC Shannon Metivier put on an impressive display to win the South Cycling Organisation Road Race. Metivier of Madonna Wheleers won the grand event ahead of Ashton Williams and home town boy of Trinity Wheelers, Elisha Greene on Sunday. Williams who was returning to the track after a 14-year absence before surprised cycling fans with his performance. Greene on the other hand could be a bit disappointed with his finish. Team Trek’s Richard Ramchand finished fourth in the race, while Shevon Edwards of Madonna secured the fifth spot. The race was the feature event of the day in the Southland at the weekend, and followed a series of splendid performances in the Junior and Veterans cagtegories . With five of this country’s top junior cyclists on national duty at the Junior Pan American Games in Venezuela, Scott Jaggessar took centre stage by taking the top places in two junior events, the one-lap and two-lap sprints. In the one-lap race Jagessar, riding for Madonna Wheelers claimed the top spot ahead of Nicholas Lopez of Knight Riders. J. Gomez was third. Jaggesar returned a couple hours later to again top the juniors ahead of Bevon Luces of PL Singh Sonics and Nicholas Lopez. Abede Chalmers was first among the Open 13-15 Boys. He was followed closely by Jovan Samuels of Team Trek and Trevor Commissiong of South Hampton. The Category 1&2 event was won by the impressive Sheldon Ramjit. The Hummingbird rider disposed of a large field to win the event, well ahead of Stephen Mangroo of Testi Cicli and third placed Greene. Former national champion Gene "Geronimo" Samuel (Team Trek) stormed in for the fourth-place finish. Roydon Bacchus also shared in the prizes at the weekend in the Southland when he won the Category 3&4 race. The Knight Rider man finshed ahead of Roger Malco of Madonna and third place Shevon Edwards. However Samuel then returned to claim the top spot in the veterans 40-49 event. Gregory Dandrade of Madonna was second in the event while Wayne Samuel of Southclaine was close on his heels for the third place finish. The veterans 50 years and over race was won by a physically fit Peter Hernandez of Rafmon Mecalfab. Hernandez outclassed a large field in the race for the top prize, but only after he was made to work tooth and nail by another Southclaine rider Terry Andrews and third place Earl La Fond of Team Trek. Among the Category Five riders, the top spot went to M Hosein while second and third places were taken by J Price and A Roberts respectively. Ronald Peters then secured the first position among the veterans 60 years and over. He was followed closely in second by Joey Nunes. In another 13-15 open event for juniors, Chalmers again stepped foward to win the race with consummate ease while the other two finishers almost duplicated the result of the earlier race, with Samuels and Commissiong securing second and third respectively. Mangroo then bounced back in the race that followed for category 1&2 riders to claim the top spot and avenge his earlier defeat. Greene also improved his performance with a second place finish while Christopher Selliers was third in the grand event. Edwards again stood out in the category 3&4 race while Malco and Brandon Phillips could only follow.
