Torry leads ‘Ping’ Canadian junior golf
TOP Trinidad and Tobago junior golfer Diana Torry has taken the lead in the Stephen Ames Canada Tour, Ping Eastern Canadian Junior Open Championships at Eagle Ridge Golf Club, Georgetown, Ontario. Torry shot an even-par 72 to lead the 13-18 age group by six shots over Erica Rivard of Tecumesh, Ontario (78) with Amy Roberts (Don Mills, Ontario) third on 79 but another Trinidadian Martine de Gannes is eighth on 85. Shane Costello also had a round of par 72, but he holds third place in the 16-19 boys group, five shots adrift of leader Adam McCauley of Oakville, Ontario who had a five-under par 67. Tim Lew of Courtice Ontario and Tim O’Brien of London, Ontario are joint second on a one-under par 71, but Trinidadian Simon Merry is in a tie for ninth position after shooting a three over-par 75. Trinidadians Ben Martin and Kyle Knaggs struggled on yesterday’s opening day in the 14-16 age group on the very tight and narrow fairways, which calls for great accuracy rather than distance. And with the greens playing lightning fast, golfers must be very accurate. Martin had a round of seven over-par 79 to be in a tie for 28th, while Knaggs is tied for 37th.In the 13 and under category, Trinidad and Tobago’s Timothy Martin shot a round of 88 but still managed to be second to Patrick Cansfield of Port Huron, Ontario who had a three over-par 75. Martin’s teammate Seron Mclville finished his round on 90 which was good enough for third place at the end of round one.
