Jamaica crush Bermuda 98-6


CARIBBEAN queens Jamaica gave a ruthless display in clobbering neighbours Bermuda 98-6, in their opening game of the World Youth Netball Championships 2005 at Broward Convention Centre, Fort Lauderdale, Miami.


They achieved their lopsided victory despite replacing both their shoots.


Romelda Aiken started at goal-shoot and scored 49 of 55 attempts, and substitute Latoya Thomas got 29 of 33. Starting goal-attack Jodi-Ann Ffrench had nine of 12 attempts and reserve Kadian Mendes netted 11 of 13., while for the Bermudians, Frederica "Peaches" Samuels scored all six goals from 11 attempts.


Up to Press time last night, there was no word on the game between the Trinidad and Tobago junior "Calypso Girls" netballers and Samoa.


Of the six Caribbean teams engaged, apart from Jamaica the only others to win were Barbados who beat Fiji 43-39.


Defending champions Australia were off to a rollicking start with a 70-12 victory over Scotland in their Pool "A" match on Friday evening.


The Aussies led throughout and as a team shot 82 per cent with all their reserves taking the court in a one-sided game.


Starting goal-shoot Susan Pratley scored 22 of her 24 attempts and reserve


Kate Beveridge netted 21 of 28, while staarting goal-attack Natalie Medhurst got 12 of 13 and her replacement Bianca Franklin 15 of 20.


Scotland goal-shoot Jillian Gill scored five goals from five attempts and here third quarter replacement Jill Sutherland had one of seven, and goal-attack


Nicola Collins six of nine.
