‘Calypso Girls’ n-ballers beaten


TRINIDAD and Tobago under-21 "Calypso Girls" netballers were trounced by Western Samoa 48-36 in their opening game of the World Youth Netball Championships 2005 at Broward Convention Centre, Fort Lauderdale.


The Western Samoans outplayed the youthful "Calypso Girls" netballers from the start on Saturday afternoon, leading 11-9 at the end of the first quaarter.


They extended the lead by the half-time interval to 22-17, and although the "Calypso Girls" outscored Western Samoa 11-9 in their third quarter to trail by only three goals 31-28 entering the final period, they were outscored 17-8 for the final scoreline.


Goal-shoot Candace Nelson shot 29 goals from 33 attempts and goal-attack Afeisha Noel had seven from 10.


And last night, the junior "Calypso Girls" netballers were struggling against neighbouring Barbados in a game they must win to keep in contention for a place among the first two teams in Pool "D".


Caribbean queens Jamaica scored their second victory of the series in as many matches when they disposed of South Africa 48-37 in Pool "B"


But champions Australia showed they will not be easily be relieved of their crown with another crushing victory, this time over Cook Islands 89-28 in Pool "A".

Pool B - CANADA (34) vs USA (32); SOUTH AFRICA (71) vs BERMUDA (13)


Pool C - WALES (61) vs ANTIGUA & BARBUDA (44); NORTHERN IRELAND (54) vs BOTSWANA (37).
