Fiji stun junior ‘Calypso Girls’ netballers

After a surprise and comprehensive 46-35 victory over Caribbean neighbours Barbados on Sunday night the young "Calypso Girls" netballers failed against the Fijians, and with only 4th ranked England to play is in a toss-up with the Bajans for the cellar-position in Pool D. Against the Bajans, the Trinidadians led by a goal, 9-8 at the end of the first quarter, but with goal-shoot Candace Nelson her steady self the lead was increased to 22-14 at the halfway stage.

The Barbadians were not done however, and they outscored the junior "Calypso Girls" netballers 14-10 to end the third quarter four goals adrift 32-28.

But the Trinidadians defence held tight in the final stanza, limiting the Bajans to just seven goals while goal-attack Afeisha Noel added her quota. Nelson ended with 31 goals from 38 attempts (82 percent accuracy) and Noel 15 of 19 (79 percent accuracy).

For the Barbadians, goal-shoot Cassandra Cutting netted 20 of her 33 attempts (61 percent) , while goal-attack Leanne Greenidge had 13 goals from 17 attempts (76 percent) before being replaced by Nikita Piggott in the third quarter. She scored two goals from three attempts (67 percent ).

No details of yesterday afternoon’s game against Fiji were available however.

WA - Rhonessa Williams, C - Kimerie James, WD - Corisia Blugh, GD - Alicia Liverpool, GK - Anastacia Sylvan.

No reserves were used.

For the game, Trinidad and Tobago shot 80 percent, scoring three of their four penalties, while Barbados shot 66 percent including five of seven penalties.
