Wilson (U-13), Sanguinette (Under-15) squash champs


KALE WILSON and Justin Sanguinette were crowned champions in their respective categories of the CLICO-sponsored Junior Caribbean Area Squash Championship at the Cascadia Hotel Courts, St Ann’s.


In the Under-13 age bracket, Wilson got the better of Chris Stout of Bermuda in the final yesterday. TT’s Wilson defeated his opponent 9-3, 9-6, 8-10, 5-9, 9-3 to be crowned the champion, as his family, friends and well wishers looked on in joy, and least bit surprised of the victory.


His victory was followed by another title for the home team, in which Sanguinette whipped the Cayman Island’s Alain Mudeen in the Under-15 final at the same venue. Sanguinette led from start to finish in the three-set match, as he won 9-6, 9-6, 9-6 much to the delight of the home fans.


The Under-13 category also saw a victory for Andrez Bascombe of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) over Jamaica’s Ashante Smith in a battle for third and fourth position in the division. Guyana’s Deje Dias also got the better of TT’s Ryan Bayne in the final of the Under-13 Plate event.


The result meant that Bascombe was the third best in the Caribbean while Wilson and Sanguinette were best in their respective age brackets.


Trinidad and Tobago also secured the winning spot in the final of the Under-15 Plate final as Kevin Ross in three sets, silenced Carl Stubbs jr of Bahamas 9-3, 9-1, 9-1. Adrian Dyette claimed seventh position in the Under-17 Division when he defeated Javid Rahaman of Guyana in a play-off.


This game followed a fifth and sixth place play-off which saw Alex Garcia of Barbados clobber the OECS Joe Chapman 10-8, 9-6, 7-9, 9-1.


Bahamas’ Clifford Bodie also got the better of TT’s Justin Gomez in the final of the Under-17 Plate 9-2, 10-8, 9-2.


In the Plate final of the Under-19 Boys Divison, Shane Slater of the OECS prevailed over Bermuda’s Graham Counsell 9-5, 9-3, 7-9, 9-2.
