TT n-ballers edge Malaysia 48-46


TRINIDAD and Tobago under-21 "Calypso Girls" netballers eked out a 48-46 result over Malaysia for only their second victory, as second round action in the 5th World Youth Netball Championships began at Broward Convention Centre, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, yesterday.


The young Trinidadians were beaten 49-30 by England in their final first-rounder on Tuesday night, but with Barbados also being beaten 58-31 by Samoa they slipped into third place in Pool D on better goal-average and could now finish no higher than ninth overall.


Against the English goal-shoot Candace Nelson and goal-attack Afeisha Noel again shot brilliantly but the centre-court failed them as they had only 39 attempts collectively, while the English shoots had 63.


Nelson had 13 goals from 18 attempts (72 percent) and Noel 17 of 21 (81 percent).


But England who led by just four goals at the end of the opening quarter — 11-7, kept extending their advantage to 27-11 at the half time interval.


After taking the third period 41-17, England let up a bit and coasted to their victory despite being outscored 13-8 by the youthful "Calypso Girls" netballers.


England were led by goal-shoot Louisa Brownfield who slotted in 31 goals from 38 attempts (82 percent), while goal-attack Natalie Woolley got four of six (67 percent) before being replaced by Asha Tett in the second quarter who scored 14 goals from 19 attempts (74 percent). The "Calypso Girls" netballers starting line up was: GS - Candace Nelson, GA - Afeisha Noel, WA - Kimerie James, C - Aisha Norman, WD - Anika McLean, GD - Ayana Hamlet, GK - Alicia Liverpool.


Reserves: None used.


Trinidad & Tobago as a team shot 77 percent, scoring all nine penalties, while 9 England shot 78 per cent and scored 15 of their 18 penalty shots.
