Lions face Police fire in knock out

REIGNING Sportworld Super League knockout titlists Joe Public will open their defence against Police when the 2005 contest kicks off on August 10. The match, which will be played at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Tunapuna from 6.30 pm, is one of four first round matches on the draw. Stokely Vale, Media 21 FC, Couva Players United and WASA Clean & White all earned free  passages to the next round. But each match will be played for a duration of 80 minutes, with a 20-minute extra time (if needed) and kicks from the penalty mark to determine the winner.

This tournament is unique in the sense that the first round losers will feature in three play-off matches, on August 17, 21 and 22, while the first round winners advance to the quarter-finals on August 14, then the “semis” on August 19 and the final on August 26. The knockout winner will pocket $20,000 with the runners-up receiving half that amount. In the other first round fixtures on August 10, current league leaders Crab Connection will meet PLIPDECO Caroni at Gilbert Park Couva; Maraval Youth Academy will host M&M Harvard at the Trinity College Ground, Moka; and at Canaan, Bon Accord, Angostura 1976 FC Phoenix will come up against Superstar Rangers. Those three matches will kick off at 4 pm.
