City in effort to clean up its act

GARBAGE collection in Port-of-Spain is to receive a major boost with the expected acquisition of six new compactors by the Port-of-Spain Corporation.

The six compactors are among 14 new vehicles to be delivered to the corporation shortly.

In making the announcement, Mayor Murchison Brown said with the new compactors, all workers of the Transport and Cleansing Department are expected to do their best to ensure that Port-of-Spain re-mains the cleanest municipality in the country.

Earlier this year, members of the institutions committee had complained about the poor quality of work by contractors.

It was also stated at that time that the Transport and Cleansing Department, if given the necessary equipment and manpower, would do a better job at cleaning the city.

The mayor last week appealed to burgesses and all concerned to cease putting bulky garbage for pick-up by the compactors.

"Old building material and furniture are not compactable," he said.

The mayor also noted that tree-cuttings should not be put on the roadside.

There are other ways of disposing of such material, explained Brown.

Meanwhile, Brown is now in Benin, West Africa, where he is attending a meeting of the World Mayors’ Conference, of which he is chairman.
