South accident leaves one dead, three injured

AN accident in South Trinidad, which occurred yesterday morning, has claimed the life of a 49-year-old man and left three other persons including a 12-year-old girl hospitalised.

The death of Lawrence Ramdass, of Plum Street, (Block Five) Palmiste, near San Fernando, has pushed the number of road fatalities for this year to 110.

According to police reports, at about 8 am, a 22-year-old man who lives in Chaguanas was driving his blue Mitsubishi Lancer car west along the M2 Ring Road which connects the Cross Crossing Interchange with Golconda Village.

On reaching Pidemont Boulevard near the Union Hall NHA development, the driver attempted to overtake a vehicle and subsequently crashed head on into Ramdass’ white Mazda 323 which was proceeding in the opposite direction. Also in the car with Ramdass were his wife Sandra, 47, and their 12-year-old daughter, Delisa.

The impact of the collision caused Ramdass to crash through the windscreen of his car and onto the road. Death was almost instantaneous, police sources said.

Ramdass’ wife who was the front seat passenger suffered major head injuries, while Delisa sustained minor injuries. Mother and daughter were taken to San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH) in an EHS ambulance where they were treated and warded.

The driver of the Mitsubishi Lancer sustained minor injuries and was treated at the SFGH. Ramdass’ body was taken to the San Fernando mortuary where an autopsy is expected to be carried out today.

Cpl Ramdhanie of the San Fernando Police Traffic Department is investigating.
