Top cop denies probe of executive officer
Police Commissioner Trevor Paul yesterday denied media reports allegedly implicating a member of the police executive in wrongful acts and conduct. In a release yesterday, the commissioner described the reports as completely untrue and outright fiction, stating emphatically that no member of the executive is being investigated at this time for any offence or acts of wrongful conduct. Paul said it was rather bizarre that the media can report rumours and misleading information as fact, when a simple check with his office would have revealed that the report had no basis. An incidents such as this, Paul explained, was not well-advised nor best practice for the media, as it caused unnecessary anxiety among a public inclined to believe what they hear, read and see in the press. Despite the denial by the commissioner, sources at the Special Anti-crime Unit (SAUTT) confirmed that a senior police officer is under investigation. SAUTT said that while the senior cop’s office was searched, his home was not. The officer under probe is out of the country and expressed surprise at the allegations. When contacted by Newsday yesterday, Paul insisted that no member of the executive is under probe.
