Jamaica, Canada in Youth Cup quarter-finals

JAMAICA, CANADA, Guatemala and Martinique all maintained their winning steaks, and also booked their places in tomorrow’s quarter-finals of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-15 Youth Cup with contrasting victories yesterday.

At the Marvin Lee Stadium in Tunapuna, the Jamaicans absolutely slaughtered the British Virgin Islands 21-0, Canada trounced St Lucia 10-0 at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Guatemala cruised past Aruba 8-0 at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva while Martinique edged Guyana 2-1 at Guaracara Park in Pointe-a-Pierre.

Besides a 69th minute own-goal, seven Jamaicans found the back of the net yesterday, with Dever Orgill leading the pack with five — 36th, 63rd, 64th, 74th and 86th; four from Jeffrey Johnson 16th, 19th, 35th and 82nd; three apiece from Akeem Brown fourth, 17th and 24th, Ateba Morgan 28th, 39th and 45th and Shadoe Hanson 44th, 50th and 54th. Other scorers in the rout were Adrian Christian (42nd) and Shavor Brown (53rd).

Two hours earlier, St Vincent got the better of Bahamas 2-0 with strikes from Myron Samuel (34th) and Michael Collis (71st).

Christopher Sheriffe netted a beaver-trick, in the third, 60th, 75th and 87th minutes, while Cristobal Robles notched a pair, in the 65th and 81st, with one apiece from Chomesh Chaudhuri (37th), Andrew Barselona (52nd), Marcus Johnstone (55th) and William Hyde (56th) to ensure full points at the expence of the St Lucians in Group C.

Yesterday’s win completed a fantastic three days for the Canadians. Hours after arriving in the sister isle on Friday, they whipped Dominica 9-0 and followed it up with a 6-0 spanking of Grenada on Saturday, in a rescheduled fixture.

Guatemala had little trouble against Aruba in Group A, with a pair from Boris Palma (20th and 25th), while Angelo Padilla (12th), David Aroche (28th), Byron De La Cruz (32nd), Diego Vasquez (57th), Jose Figueroa (62nd) and Byron Vega (69th) guiding them to their third straight win. The United States Virgin Islands finished second in the group, after a hard-fought 5-3 victory over Antigua/Barbuda in the other match at the venue.

Martinique got a last minute winner from Jeremy Mongis to defeat Guyana in their Group D contest, after Andrew Murray’s 72nd minute strike cancelled out Peter Louise’s 56th minute opener. Earlier in the afternoon, Suriname overcame Puerto Rico 2-0 with goals by Rodney Balfour (44th) and Delano Chan Jet Soe (90th).

Up to press time, the Grenadians were meeting Dominica in Tobago while, in a late double-header at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, the Netherlands Antilles were opposing St Kitts/Nevis while Trinidad and Tobago were due to face the winless Anguilla.
