TT rugger men start winning
DEFENDING Regional Rugby Champions Trinidad and Tobago got off to a winning start in the second to last round of the 2007 Rugby World Cup qualifiers, when they crushed St Lucia 82-0 in Georgetown, Guyana, on Sunday. The Calypso men got going from the start as they led 44-0 at the half-time interval and continued their dominance in the remaining period. Tries in the first half from Johnathan O’Connor, Wayne Kelly, Don Rojas, Garvin Toussaint and Brent Barry — who also scored a penalty and three conversions, assured Trinidad and Tobago a handsome lead after the first interval. The remaining 38 points in the following period came from tries by Allan Fraser, Toussaint, Ronald Silverthorne and Nyuen Gfranco. Barry again made sure with the following conversions to seal the win. Afterwards the TT manager Curtis Nero said while the tries were generally scored by the backs moving the ball wide, the forwards were solid, the rucking was excellent but the lineout needed some tidying up. In the first game Barbados defeated Guyana 27-17 in a match that many felt should have gone to the Guyanese. Guyana failed to utilise their backs who were outstanding when they got the ball. It allowed the Barbadians to stormed back after trailing 12-0 early in the match. The Barbadians earned themselves two push over tries by kicking the ball into the 22 area and dominating the forwards position. Trinidad and Tobago will next meet Barbados in their second match of the tournament tomorrow. The winners of the Southern Caribbean Championship from which Trinidad and Tobago are taking part, will face the winner of the North Caribbean Championship for a place to play in the World Cup on October 1 in Bahamas.
