Crabs trapped in Super League
LEAGUE leaders Crab Connection were eliminated in the first round of the Sportworld Super League knockout competition when they were beaten 3-2 by PLIPDECO Caroni at Gilbert Park, Couva, yesterday. Maraval Youth Academy also advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating M&M Harvard 3-1, after kicks-from-the-penalty-spot, at Trinity College Ground, Moka, Maraval. Up to press time last night the defending champs, the "Eastern Lions" Joe Public, were squaring off against Police at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Tunapuna. With all games playing over a duration of 80 minutes (40-per-half), Caroni raced to a 3-0 lead against the Crabs, following a three-goal span within the space of eight minutes. Kyle Cupid opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, while Stephen Gray netted an own goal to extend Caroni’s lead in the 26th. Four minutes later, Cupid notched his second, before veteran midfielder Warren Butler pulled one back for the Crabs in the 38th. Brian Wallace reduced the deficit to 3-2 in the 68th minute but Caroni, held firm until the end. Joel Penco converted a 37th minute penalty to put Harvard ahead, before national Under-20 midfielder Hayden Tinto equalised in the 58th. With the scores deadlocked at full-time.
