Seniors, Super Seniors lead Hoerman

TRINIDAD AND Tobago seniors and Super seniors golfers were atop the leaderboard after the penultimate day of the 49th annual Caribbean Golf Championships (Hoerman Cup), at the Royal St Kitts Golf Course, Frigate Bay, St Kitts.

Entering today’s final day, the TT seniors are on course for the Francis and Steele Perkins Cup for seniors, as well as the Higgs and Higgs Trophy for super seniors.

The seniors pair of Ray Roberts and Barry Ferdinand returned a score of 69 yesterday for a three-day score of 209, four shots ahead of Barbados and Puerto Rico, both on 213.

In the Super Seniors, TT’s duo of Asraph Ali and Pat Suraj tallied 68 for an overall total of 202, same as Puerto Rico, and it seems a two-horse race for the title.

The Hoerman Cup men have a total of 300, seven strokes behind Dominican Republic (293), with Jamaica third on 306, while the women in the George Teale Trophy added 157 to their overnight score of 305, for a tally of 462, 16 behind Puerto Rico.

Individually, national youth champ Simon Merry is second on the leaderboard with 219 (76), with Cayman Islands’ Johnny Widmer ahead with 217 (70). Carlos ‘Sexy’ Baynes is sixth with 223 (72), Shane Costelloe joint 11th with 227 (76), Mitchum Jasper joint 19th with 229 (76) and Ben Martin joint 24th with 233 (74).

Among the women, Martine De Gannes is fifth with 230 (78), Tracey Clarke joint sixth with 236 (81) and Diana Torry joint eighth with 238 (79).

All hope of a TT medal in the mid-amateurs category virtually evaporated yesterday, as the tandem of Nizam Haniff and Arjoon Samlal registered a score of 73, for a three-day tally of 220.
