WIPA pleased with WICB talks

WEST INDIES Players Association (WIPA) president Dinanath Ramnarine expressed delight after a lengthy discussion with recently-appointed West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) president Ken Gordon at WIPA’s offices, Abercromby Street, Port-of-Spain yesterday.

According to Ramnarine, "things have been very encouraging."

"We’ve agreed to a couple of things and winning the World Cup is certainly one of them," he continued.

"We’ve raised some serious issues with him and we feel that a policy should be developed. That is something he will obviously have to go to his board and discuss and we’ll (WIPA) meet and discuss it (as well)."

The former national and West Indies leg-spinner also spoke about Gordon’s revelation, earlier in the day, that the WICB plans to implement player contracts before the end of the year.

"The retainer contracts is something that we believe is needed and that’s a way forward," Ramnarine asserted. "Obviously, taking into consideration the other issues that we had disagreements with, we’ll try to come up with some kind of process."

And the 30-year-old Ramnarine also highlighted today’s charity football game, between the WIPA XI, called the ‘Real’ West Indies, and the 1989 T&T Strike Squad, which will be held at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, from 6.30 pm today.

"The guys are excited, they understand the importance of the game," Ramnarine said. "It’s to raise funds, to have a good evening, and for everyone to come out and support the guys."

He continued, "obviously the guys will enjoy being closer to the public, but there’s a greater good. Our cricketers are committed to those who need help, and Grenada and Jamaica certainly need whatever help they can get at this particular time."
