TT golfers capture Hoerman Cup


THE TEAM of Carlos "Sexy" Baynes, Shane Castelloe, Mitchum Jasper, Ben Martin and Simon Merry secured the coveted Hoerman’s Cup for Trinidad and Tobagowinning by two points on the final day yesterday of the Caribbean Golf Championship at the Royal St Kitts Golf Course, Frigate Bay, St Kitts.


The TT golfers tallied 117 after the four days of competition.Yesterday Baynes returned a 75, while Castelloe Jasper, Martin and Merry each had 69, 76, 71 and 71 respectively before victory could have be realised.


The Dominican Republic, who threatened to take home the title throughout the tournament were runners-up with a total of 119 and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) placed third, three points adrift with Trevor Levine leading the charge.


One point back was the powerful Puerto Ricans who finished fourth.


In the Higgs and Higgs Trophy competition, the local pair of Asraph Ali and Pat Suraj finished just a shot off the eventual winners, for the runners-up spot with a total of 271 points.


TT finished the final day with -13 which consist of an impressive 69 by both Ali and Suraj while the winners Puerto Rico had a -14 which came from an impressive round of 68 by Israel Ortiz and Elvin Gonzalez Senior.


The Bahamians were third with 286 while the OECS were the fourth.


Barry Ferdinand and Ray Roberts also guided Trinidad and Tobago to second place in the Francis Steele Perkins Cup.


The category was won by the Puerto Ricans who shot a -4 on the final day for an overall tally of 280. Trinidad and Tobago finished with 282 while the Bahamians were third with 286.


Barbados were fourth as they also ended the day with 286.


For the Gearge Teale Trophy, the TT girls surprisingly finished third with a 621point overall tally.


The team of Tracey Clarke, Martine De Gannes and Diana Torry ended behind the eventual winners Puerto Rico (601) and second placed Jamaica (619).


In the Ramon Baez Trophy, the pair of Nazim Haniff and Arjoon Samlal led TT to joint fourth with the OECS. Both TT and the OECS finished with 290 after four days while the winners Puerto Rico finished with 275.


Barbados and Jamaica were also joint second with 285 after the final day yesterday.
