Justice Lucky Committee give report to WICB

A REPORT that was initially scheduled to be handed in one month ago, was yesterday submitted to new West Indies Cricket Board president Ken Gordon at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Port-of-Spain, yesterday.

And Gordon only reiterated what he had earlier revealed to the media in his first meeting last week, which was to address the ongoing impasse with players’ salaries through the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) and the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).

The committee was appointed by the WIBC to review all aspects of the negotiations that led to the conclusion of its sponsorship arrangements with Cable & Wireless and its acceptance of a sponsorship agreement with Digicel.

The ex-CCN boss made it clear that WIPA president Dinanath Ramnarine is hopeful that the impasse can be resolved by September 30, which would mean that they would have to quicken its pace.

Last week, Gordon had initially stated that he was seeking to resolve the impasse by year’s end. He added however that the board must first get its structure moving before they can do anything, and this he said includes the people behind the game. "We must address our own problems first before we can study Digel or even Cable and Wireless."

Justice Lucky told the gathering that three critical factors came into play before the report could have been completed and submitted. He said these factors include the ability of the committee to work together, the passion of the West Indies people and the co-operation of the people in the West Indies.

Justice Lucky noted that while he apologised for the late submission of the report, the committee realised that it was in need of other related information from parties involved in the negotiations before the report could have been submitted.

According to Justice Lucky, some of the setbacks included the unwillingness by some directors of the WICB to be interviewed, as well the unfavourable weather conditions which saw the destruction by Hurricane Emily as well as difficulties with their travel arrangements to conduct such interviews.

He added that the committee was in no position to subpoena witnesses to testify or to produce and examine documents.

Justice Lucky said the committee had to rely on the co-operation of the persons and parties involved. He told the gathering that it is their dream to have a West Indes team as that of the Glory Days.
