Under-19s face Jamaica in one-dayer
TRINIDAD and Tobago cricketers, the newly crowned champions of the TCL (Trinidad Cement Limited) Under-19 Challenge can expect a stiff test of their mettle when they open their one-day campaign today against Jamaica. Led by batsman Jason Mohammed, the TT lads beat Barbados by a comprehensive margin of 122 runs on Monday, last day of the four-day final at Arnos Vale Playing Field in Kingstown. And they have immediately set their sights on completing a double of both the league and knock-out competitions, a feat they accomplished two years ago in Guyana. However the Jamaicans will be no pushovers having beaten the Trinidadians in the first match of the league competition last week. They will be hoping to repeat that result, riding on the momentum of back to back matches yesterday and today. Yesterday Jamaica, beat the Leeward Islands by two wickets in their first-round match at Arnos Vale. In the other match yesterday the Windward Islands beat Guyana by eight wickets at Sion Hill and will face defending champions Bar-bados today. After the victory on Tuesday, manager of the Trinidad and Tobago team Roland Sampath hinted that there may be changes in the batting line-up for the limited overs tournament. He has repeatedly criticised the team’s main batsmen for not delivering on their great promise suggesting that the bowlers were carrying the burden of their hopes. However the former Trinidad and Tobago allrounder maintains confidence in their ability to come good at the right moment and hopes that in the slightly less pressured atmosphere of the one-day game, the batsmen will set the right foundation for their bowlers to have a go at the opponents. His only concern is the condition of the Arnos Vale Playing Field which he said has not been cut for a week and has been making it difficult for the batsmen to score runs. Added to this, Sampath said heavy rains have made the outfield very heavy and the match against the Jamaicans could well be a hard slog for the newly crowned regional champions. SUMMARISED SCORES LEEWARDS 100 all out off 37 overs (Orlando Peters 21; Alton Beckford 5-15) vs JAMAICA 101-8 off 34.5 overs (Ziggy Levy 28 not out, Cordell Simpson 20; Chad Hampson 3-35; Orlando Peters 2-12). GUYANA 80 all out off 38 overs (Gajanand Singh 30; Haniff Alexander 3-25, Nelon Pascal 2-6, Earven Fredericks 2-11, Gary Daniel 2-18) vs WINDWARDS 83-2 off 31.1 overs (Lauron Francois 36 not out)
