St Vincent women whip Guyana


DEFENDING champions St Vincent and the Grenadines maintained their winning streak when they overpowered Guyana in the West Indies Women Cricket Federation League third round match played at the Stubbs ground, Kingston yesterday.


St Vincent and the Grenadines kept their hopes alive of retaining the league title with two wins in as many games.


They defeated former champs St Lucia in their opening round encounter on Saturday. Guyana who beat Barbados on Sunday on a better run rate when persistent showers prevented a completion of the reduced overs.


Barbados women cricketers registered their first victory of the series, when they defeated St Lucia by five wickets in a rain-affected third round match contested at the Arnos Vale II playing field, Kingston yesterday.


St Lucia batted first and compiled 131 for seven wickets off 44 overs. Rain interrupted the innings and six overs were lost.


There was a further rain delay causing a reduction in overs, and the Barbadians responded well, reaching the 94-run target off 32 overs.


In yesterday’s clash on a heavily-grassed outfield, however, Guyana as were bowled out for 98 off 40 overs with June Ogle 25, West Indies player Indomatie Goordial 18, and skipper Abena Parker 11 the main contributors.


West Indies player Cordell Jack, who won the regional "Most Valuable Player" award last year, took three wickets for 14 and Cleo Hoyte got three wickets for 17, while Melissa Bellingy took two for 19.


There were two interruptions because of rain and having been set 60 runs in 30 overs, St Vincent and the Grenadines romped to a comfortable eight-wicket victory.


Jack completed a good allround performance with an unbeaten 20 and Juliana Nero got 18 including two boundaries. Today is rest day for all teams.


And TT will take on Guyana in their third round encounter tomorrow at the Arnos Vale II ground.


The "Trinidadians will do battle with St Vincent and the Grenadines in the crucial decider on Thursday.
