Gomez on target at Tucker Valley
THE Fullbore Rifle Annual National Championships began yesterday at the Tucker Valley Range in Chaguaramas. This marked the start of the three-day competition where local competitors shoot for various prizes at 300, 500 and 600 yards. Brigadier Ancil Antoine officially opened the competition following the welcoming remarks by Captain Norris Gomez, vice-president of the Trinidad Rifle Association. Brig. Antoine spoke about the positive outlook for shooting in Trinidad, beginning with better kept ranges as well as the implementation of a 1,000 yard range. He then fired the traditional first shot of the day to mark the beginning of the competition. Marksmen faced varied conditions yesterday ranging from extreme heat and sunshine to humidity and rainfall, back to relentless sunshine again towards the end of the day. The X-Class first place winner of the First-day Aggregate went to Norris Gomez with a total of 154.19, while in the O-Class category Petty Officer (PO) Takoor Sankar won the First-day Aggregate with a score of 147.12. The Belleville O-Class trophy, which is awarded to first place at 500 yards was won by Ezekiel Joseph with a score of 68.2. The Soochit X-Class trophy awarded to the first-place at 500 yards was won by Steven Chung with a score of 74.9. Both scores out of a possible 75.15. Norris Gomez won the Caldwell Trophy, which is awarded to the overall winner at 600 yards. The competition resumes today at 8.30 am at Tucker Valley.
