Marlins beat Cubs at Wrigley Field
ANOTHER big name has been added to the Trinidad and Tobago slate for the September 23 world title showdown against the US at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo. But there are major concerns over the readiness of some of the local boxers on the card staged by ABC Boxing Academy. It was revealed yesterday that there is a strong possibility that Giselle Salandy will fight on September 23 adding more interest in the presentation. Boxing promoter and match-maker Buxo Potts yesterday confirmed that contact was made with Salandy’s caretakers and a verbal agreement was reached. According to Potts, ABC Boxing Promotions have also contacted a number of other top fighters to be on the card, a move which coincides with his outfit’s dream to take local boxing internationally. According to Potts, his company also wants to elevate local boxing the the same level as football and cricket. He said a contract was given to Salandy’s handlers and her confirmation for the showdown will be known when it is submitted to ABC Boxing Promotions today. Salandy emerged as a teenaged talent several years ago in her native Siparia. She gained prominence by beating Colombia’s Paula Rojas for the regional Ibero-Latin American welterweight title fight in Curacao shortly after and successfully defended the crown at the Chaguanas Regional Indoor Sports Auditorium two years ago. Newsday understands that attempts to include Trinidad and Tobago’s latest female world title champion Ria Ramnarine were not successful. Potts said ABC Promotions contacted Ramnarine’s manager Barath Ramoutar to have the flyweight champion on the card but was told she had other engagements. He added that he will continue in his attempt to contact all the top local female fighters and try to get them on the card. Potts is also urging the management of the top boxers to contact him at 622-0800 for this possibility. Ramoutar, in a response yesterday, said while he congratulated Potts for attempting to elevate the sport, he does not want Ramnarine on the card. "Potts does not have the best interest of my fighter at heart and therefore I will continue to arrange fights for her until someone credible comes along," he said. Ramoutar said he has had previous experiences with Potts where Ramnarine is concerned and was not satisfied with the outcome. However he said the September 23 card will be a good experience for the local fighters, because of the exposure they will get but expressed concern about whether the boxers are evenly balanced in ability and number of fights. Main bout on the card features Trinidad-born Canadian Lisa "Bad News" Brown, against Jackie Chavez over ten rounds for the World Boxing Council-World International Women’s Federation unification crown. The other fights are Kim " Bone Crusher" Quashie against Carly Pessente; Iva Weston meets Yvonne Reese and Scroller Carrington fights Teresa Perozzi.
