TT get seven picks on WI squad

SEVEN players from the victorious Trinidad and Tobago Women Cricket team have earned places on the West Indies training squad which will participate in future competitions to be sought out by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).

The players are the talented Anisa Mohammed, Felicia Cummings, Jade Chadee, Kirbyina Alexander, Lee Ann Kirby, Marissa Aquillera and Nelly Williams.

The Trinidadians completed the double in the recent West Indies Women Cricket tournament in St Vincent and the Grenadines when they won the three-day league and limited-overs knock-out tournaments.

The victorious girls returned home yesterday morning with trophies and medals on display, as they were greeted by happy fans friends and family members alike at the Piarco International Airport.

Clad in their colourful red, white and black track suits the girls wore big smiles, not only because they had won the tournament, but because they had set about to give their captain Stephanie Power a memorable retirement. The talented Envis Williams was also rewarded for being the highest wicket taker throughout the tournament with nine wickets, but her efforts only added to the allround performance which earned them both titles in emphatic fashion. Manager Majorie Thomas described the tournament as exciting and interesting, but said the win was dedicated to long serving captain Power who will retire from international cricket at the end of this tournament. According to Thomas, the win came courtesy some gutsy performances by both the batters and the bowlers.

"Although we found ourselves in some tight spots at times, we knew we were going to win because of the experience we had in the team," Thomas told the media at yesterday’s arrival home.

She noted that the bowlers in particular had given them a huge start in the three-day matches and the limited-overs games, and added further that Envis Williams was particularly superb with the ball and deserved the award. She stated also that the performance of the women is an indication that women’s cricket was on the rise in Trinidad and Tobago, and could soon be matched with that of the men’. Power has been captain of the Trinidad and Tobago women team for "ages", during which time she has contributed tremendously with the bat, ball and behind the wicket. The veteran cricketer earned an award for having the most dismissals as a wicketkeeper in the competition.

Kirbyina Alexander’s performances also earned her a place among the top five in the regional tournament along with Charlene Taitt (Barbados), Indomatie Goordial (Guyana), Swaylene Williams (St Lucia) and Cherry Ann John (St Vincent).
