TT Williams (E), Power among WI best
LEADING Trinidadian women cricketers Envis Williams and captain Stephanie Power were among the top performers in just concluded West Indies Women cricket series in St Vincent and the Grenadines. TT copped both the league and knockout titles and returned home as a triumphant team which entered the country’s name into the regional history books as the first team to win the inaugural women competitions held by the West Indies Cricket Board, which is now responsible for the promotion of the game regionally for both male and female players alike. The West Indies Women Cricket Federation has now become an amalgamated entity with the WICB. And this has come about through the instrumentality of the International Cricket Council (ICC) which governs the game globally. After securing the unique regional double, the TT women contingent joined the other four participating teams at the presentation ceremony which was held not too long after TT retained the Knockout title by defeating host St Vincent and the Grenadines by a thrilling four-wicket margin at the Arnos Vale I ground on Sunday last. SVG made 90 all out in 40.4 overs and TT replied with 91 for six with skipper Power (21 not out) and Nelly Williams (16 not out) piloting the twin-island republic to victory after being in serious trouble at 41 for six wickets. Power and Williams shared in an unbroken 50-run seventh wicket partnership which eased all the tension and sparked off jubilation among the Trinidadians team and its supporters in Vinci Land. They overpowered the Vincentians who would like to forget the power of the Trinis in both the League and Limited-Overs Knockout series. However, there was some consolation for the SVG team as Cordel Jack picked up three League awards. She won prizes for the ?Highest Aggregate in the League with 111 runs plus the Best Average in the League 37.00 and the Best Bowling Performance with four wickets for 14 runs. TTs Envis Williams brought home the Most Wickets in the League award with nine (9) wickets overall. The Player of the Series award went to Barbadian allrounder Pamela Lavine who scored a total of 188 runs plus six (6) wickets. She also collected the Best Batting in the Knockout Series award with 57 not out against new regional double-crowned champions Trinidad and Tobago in the semi-finals at Stubbs ground on Saturday last. Despite Lavine’s brilliant showing with the bat, TT won comfortably and advanced to the final which they also won and secured the historic regional women’s double. Lennox John, WICB director and member of the Integration Steering Committee; Julian Jack, president of the St Vincent & the Grenadines Cricket Association and Ann Browne-John, member of the WICB Cricket Committee (Women) were among those who spoke at the presentation ceremony on Sunday evening. Surprisingly, both TT?s top awardees, Envis Williams and Power, were not among the 23-member WI squad shortlisted for training.
