Victorious TT cricketers to be honoured
TRINIDAD and Tobago's regional successful cricket teams will be honoured and felicitated today at a special function organised by the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board at the Sir Frank Worrell Development Centre, Balmain from 7 pm.Officials of the TTCB decided to bring together all the players who performed outstandingly and brought honour and glory to the twin-island republic of TT. The unprecedented successes by the senior men team, the under 15 team m the under 19 and the women's team started last year October.Under the astute leadership of West Indies A team captain Daren Ganga, returned home from Barbados triumphant with the WICB President's Cup. They dethroned Guyana in the grand final on October 31 at the famous Kensington Oval, Bridgetown. TT campaigned successfully without the services of West Indies Test players Brian Lara, Mervyn Dillon, Dwayne Bravo, Ravi Ramphal and Dave Mohammed plus WI A team player Lendl Simmons and WI youth player Tishan Maraj. It was one of the greatest achievements by a TT senior team in the regional limited-overs competition. And to crown a glorious series, attacking opener Sherwin Ganga, wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin and captain Daren Ganga copped the four major individual awards.Sherwin won the "Best Allrounder" and "Best Bowler"prizes, Ramdin collected the "Best Wicketkeeper" award while Daren was voted "Best Fielder". The senior team was severed hampered in their quest for the regional double and bowed out in the Semi-finals. Most of the Test players were again unavailable plus there were injuries to Sherwin Ganga, who was forced to under surgery to fix his right cheekbone which was struck by a wicked lifting delivery from Jamaica's WI fast bowler Darren Powell. In that same match in Jamaica, there was a serious setback in the squad with the withdrawal of services by Imran Jan and disciplinary problems with Shazam Babwah and Dave Mohammed. Reliable opener Tishan Maraj was forced to miss key away and home matches because of the demands of medical studies at the St Augustine UWI Campus Faculty of Medicine. Skipper Ganga and Ramdin eventually moved up to the higher level. Ganga was back in the WI Test team but lost his place after a low score in the 2005 Digicel First Test against South Africa at GCC, Bourda. Ramdin made an impressive start to his Test career with the West Indies team against Sri Lanka. He was also outstanding in the Triangular Limited-overs series involving India and host Sri Lanka. TT-based Ricardo Powell who was a member of the triumphant President's Cup also was a member of the WI team in the Indian Oil Triangular series.
