JOE PUBLIC capitalised on Crab Connection’s first defeat of the 2005 Sportworld Super League to claim top spot on a dramatic day of 13th round action yesterday. The "Eastern Lions" Joe Public cruised to a 4-0 triumph over Couva Players United at Gilbert Park, Couva while the Crabs went under 2-1 to WASA Clean & White in St Joseph. Joe Public have a tally of 30 points, two more than Crabs while WASA is also on 28 points, but have a lower goal difference than Connection. At Couva, the Jamaican trio of Roen Nelson (11th and 58th), Carlington Smith (45th) and Wolry Wolfe (75th) were on target as the Lions showed no mercy on their hosts. Meanwhile, WASA raced to an early 2-0 lead over Crabs, courtesy Kirth Hutchings in the first minute and Darrin Lewis in the fifth, but temperamental striker Marlon Warner, who was allowed to play for Connection pending appeal of a lengthy ban for indiscipline, pulled one back in the 90th. Superstar Rangers remained in fourth position in the standings following a 2-1 win over Maraval Youth Academy at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo. Burly striker Akudu Goodridge converted a 69th minute penalty for Rangers to ensure victory, after Clinton Corbin equalised for Maraval in the 66th. Goodridge had earlier put Rangers in front after six minutes of play. Marlon Stoute netted twice, in the 18th and 80th, the latter via the penalty spot, as PLIPDECO Caroni whipped cellar-placed Media 21 FC 2-0 at the Mt Hope Junior Secondary Ground but the day’s biggest winner came in the sister isle as Angostura 1976 FC Phoenix thrashed Stokely Vale 6-3 in an all-Tobago contest at Canaan, Bon Accord. Stokely Vale began the match with only eight players and, even though they had a maximum of ten on the field, could find no answer to the Phoenix goalspree — Dominique Kerr (sixth and 78th), Gary Bruce (21st), Kevin Keith (28th), Lejandro Williams (30th) and Hayden Moses (65th penalty), while the Stokely Vale got items from Shawn Christmas (34th), Warren Phillips (68th penalty) and Darron Williams (87th). In the second match of the doubleheader at Mucurapo, Police strolled past M&M Harvard 2-0 with a double from striker Neri Joseph, in the 50th and 68th minutes.
