WIPA tell players to attend camp
THE WEST Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) have advised their members to accept the invitation of the WI Cricket Board (WICB) to attend a training camp in preparation for the upcoming Australian tour. In reassuring the public that steps have been taken to further the resolution of all outstanding issues between the parties, WIPA warned that there is no agreement on the contentious Match/Tour Contract sent out by the WI to the 30 invited players. Among the players invited are double world record-holder Brian Lara, Ramnaresh Sarwan, opening batsman Chris Gayle and fast bowlers Corey Collymore and Fidel Edwards. Because of the ongoing impasse the leading players were omitted from the recent two-Test tour of Sri Lanka and triangular one-day series also involving India. In a media release yesterday WIPA, through their Chief Executive Officer Dinanath Ramnarine, stated their commitment to finding a solution and for the best team to be selected for the Australian tour. Following is the full text of the WIPA release: WIPA wants to reassure the public that steps have been tabled to further the resolution of all outstanding issues. The new President WICB Mr Ken Gordon and WIPA President Mr Dinanath Ramnarine have agreed on the way forward accordingly. This weekend Mr Charles Wilkin Senior Counsel on behalf of the WICB will be meeting with Dr Kusha Haraksingh (CARIFORUM Lead Negotiator on Dispute Resolution) who would act on behalf of WIPA to settle all outstanding issues. It was agreed by the WICB and WIPA that WIPA would advise all invited players that they may accept the invitation to participate in the camp in preparation for the tour to Australia with the clear understanding that there has been no agreement with regards to the Match/Tour Contract and that the players would not be bound by the Draft Match/Tour Contract which accompanied the invitation sent by the WICB for the Australian tour later this year as discussions are ongoing. Despite WIPA receiving a copy of the Match/Tour Contract on the 13th September the same day it was sent to the players it wants to reassure the public and all stakeholders that we are committed to finding a resolution and for the best team to tour Australia which is scheduled later this year.
