Neck injury forces match off
A NECK injury suffered by Stokely Vale’s midfielder Makesi Jordan in the 68th minute of play, and the prolonged wait for medical personnel to arrive at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, forced the abandonment of their Sportworld Super League 16th round contest against M&M Harvard yesterday. Jordan sustained the injury when he was contesting a high-ball with a Harvard defender and, with no medics available, was forced to lay on the ground for 25 minutes until an ambulance arrived on the ground. The literal handful of supporters were concerned by the state of affairs on the field, referee Patrick Hunte seemed determined to continue the match but the Stokely Vale squad, worried both about their teammate’s condition and their 8 pm return flight to the sister isle, felt ill at ease over the matter. In the end, the officials agreed to abandon the game, with Harvard leading 2-1 with goals from Keremme Goddard (30th minute) and Ahkel Fairbane (51st) following Jerome Dickson’s opener (seventh). Meanwhile, Joe Public and Crab Connection widened the gap between themselves and the chasing pack after comfortable victories away to PLIPDECO Caroni and Media 21 FC respectively. With third-placed WASA Clean & White battling to a nail-biting 2-2 draw against Superstar Rangers, the "Eastern Lions" Joe Public stay top with 39 points, with the ‘Crabs’ two points adrift while WASA is third on 32. At Gilbert Park in Couva, Joe Public crushed Caroni by a 4-0 margin with Carlington Smith registering a hat-trick, in the 12th, 42th and a 59th minute penalty, while Roen Nelson added the other in the 31st. The "Crabs" handed Media 21 a 4-1 licking at the Mt Hope Junior Secondary Ground, with strikes from Irvin Trim (35th), Kirston Graham (38th) and Marlon Warner (60th and 84th), while Junior Spencer got Media’s consolation in the 63rd. The fans that turned out at WASA Ground in St Joseph saw a dramatic ending, with four goals in the space of 10 minutes. Darren Lewis broke the deadlock for WASA in the 82nd but the lead lasted only a minute when Rafer Ross levelled the scores at 1-1. Ex-national Under-17 captain Josimar Belgrave put Rangers in front in the 89th but Lewis will prove to be WASA’s hero, with the equaliser in the second minute of stoppage time. Maraval Youth Academy recorded their first win of the season, by a 2-1 margin over Angostura 1976 FC Phoenix at Canaan, Bon Accord. Colan Gomez converted two free-kicks, in the 11th and 45th while Shelton Williams netted Phoenix’s lone goal in the 57th. And, in the day’s final encounter, Police shut down Couva Players United 3-0 at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, with Dwight Elliott on target in the 33rd while Kareem Joseph added a double, in the 84th and 90th.
