Women’s boxing showdown tonight
THE STAGE is set for the biggest showdown in the history of women’s boxing. The feature title fight is between Trinidad and tobago’s rugged Lisa "Bad News" Brown and beautiful American Jackie Chavez at the Jean Pierre, Mucurapo. The ten-rounder is the highlight of a card promoted by ABC Boxing Academy in which four world titles will be at stake. Yesterday the fighters went through the weighing-in process in the VIP room of the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo. Chavez will step into the ring at 120 pounds while her opponent Brown is at 121 3/4 for the bantamweight clash. Only teenager Giselle Salandy is unsure of who her opponent as her opponent Terri Blair has said she is unable to make the trip. Yesterday officials of ABC Boxing Academy including matchmaker Buxo Potts were searching for a match for her. Potts said that Blair’s absence will mean that Salandy may not bid for a world title fights tonight. Salandy weighed in at 133 pounds and looked fit and ready hoping a match will be found so that her fans will see her in the ring. Kim " Bone Crusher" Quashie came in at 260 pounds at the weighing-in and it only served to boost her confidence, when she comes up against her 191-pound opponent Pamela London of Guyana. London appeared relaxed yesterday after weighing in at 108 pounds. Her counterpart will be the "Princes town Tigress" Vicky Boodram was was 117 pounds. Iva Weston made a late appearance for the ceremony but was five pounds heavier that her opponent Elizabeth Mooney. Weston who came with her manager Fitzroy Richards, weighed 147 but only after Richards was made to explain the reason for her late arrival. Mooney, like Chavez was calm and collected at yesterday’s ceremony and appreared t be getting herself mentally prepared for her fight. Scroller Carrington, fighting for the first time in more than a year wasn’t at the weighing-in but was listed to come up against 159-pound Tereza Peruzzi in her bout. Referee Tommy Thomas will be among a number of local and overseas referees. President of the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board Melchior Taylor said yesterday the rules to be used tonight will be the same as that of the WBA and WBC internationally. Fight-time is 8 pm.
