TT athletes shine at Senior Games


BRIDGETOWN: The Barbados senior track and field team took the lion’s share of medals while Trinidad and Tobago were especially impressive at the Re-gional Senior Games which concluded at the National Stadium on Sunday.


The host team collected a combined men and women’s total of 118 medals including 45 gold while Trinidad and Tobago snared 43 total medals, including 25 gold.


TT also had the most outstanding male and female athletes of the meet in Robert Steven-son and Monica Tang-Wing, who both competed in 65-69 age groups.


Stevenson amassed 79 points while Tang-Wing earned 60 points.


Jamaica, who took part for the first time in the event’s two-year history, earned 23 medals in total, including ten gold medals.


St Lucia finished fourth in the medal standings with 35 medals, including seven gold.


The other teams in-volved were St Vincent and the Grenadines and Dominica.


Twenty six new records were set over the weekend and the athletes competed in flat track events from the 50 metres dash to the 5,000 metres walk/run.


There was also competition in the relay as well as the long and high jump, javelin, discus and shot putt events.


The athletes ranged in age from 49 to 81 years old.
