Sarwan hits attractive century

BRIDGETOWN: Ramnaresh Sarwan’s attractive century was the highlight of the third day of the four-day West Indies practice match at the Three Ws Oval yesterday.

The 25-year-old, right hander slammed 141 as Shiv Chanderpaul’s XI piled up 305 for four in reply to Sylvester Joseph’s XI 494 all out.

Sarwan, who resumed at 45 not out overnight, hammered 19 boundaries in an innings lasting 389 minutes, and shared a 193-run, second wicket stand with opener Devon Smith who hit 84. The left handed Smith resumed at 49 not out and smashed 11 fours overall in his knock.

After Smith was caught by substitute Vonrick Nurse off part-time bowler Daren Ganga, Marlon Samuels (26) shared a 55-run, third wicket stand with Sarwan.

Samuels was eventually dismissed when he gave a return catch to Runako Morton, paving the way for a partnership of 56 between Sarwan and Wavell Hinds who was unbeaten on 16 when rain ended the match prematurely. Sarwan was finally dismissed when he gave fast bowler Fidel Edwards his lone wicket. The West Indies bowlers were particularly indisciplined, sending down some 30 no-balls in an extras count of 38. The four-day match is being played as part of a training camp in preparation for the three-Test tour of Australia next month.
