Cops release five in Licensing missing money probe

The four security guards and an employee who were held by police in connection with the theft of $50,000 from the San Fernando Licensing Department have been released.

The money was discovered missing on Thursday after Licensing Department officials went to a bank to deposit the money, which had been placed in a deposit bag. When they broke the seal, the officials observed strips of newspaper packed in it.

Licensing Department officials told police they had placed the money in a deposit bag which they sealed at about 3.30 pm on Wednesday.

The employees reported that they handed the bag to three security guards, and one of the guards wrote a receipt for $50,000 and gave it to an employee.

The bag was reportedly placed in a vault at a security firm, a police report said, and on Thursday Licensing Department officials accompanied by security guards, went to Republic Bank, Lower High Street, San Fernando, to deposit the money.

Police suspect that the culprits broke the seal and used glue to reseal it.

San Fernando detectives released the five yesterday as they continue their inquiries into the incident.
